Nolan's Home!

After more than 2 days of feedings without his tube, Nolan was discharged from the hospital this morning. He slept all the way home, had a little lunch, and is now sleeping again :)

Nolan, Ann, and I would like to thank everyone who has kept us in your thoughts & prayers. This whole experience has been amazing, and we feel very blessed to have such caring family & friends.

Nolan is 1 Week Old!

Nolan is no longer on an IV. He's also in a "big boy" bed. It's still just a plastic dish on a metal cart, but at least we can see him & pick him up without reaching through holes or opening a door.

He's pretty much self-sufficient now. He's a little picky about his feedings, so he still has the feeding tube. But they moved it to his nose so he can latch on to mom or his bottle better. He seems to eat well every other feeding. He's too tired in between, so they still gavage feed him (through the tube). Tonight he did good with mom, then had seconds from the bottle! Hungry boy, definitely my son. Hopefully he'll be taking every feeding from mom or the bottle soon!

Nolan also initiated a new nurse today while she was changing his diaper. Apparently Nolan was so explosive, the nurse had to go change her scrubs. Must have been payback for all the IV's and tubes from his first week :) A couple more of those stunts, and they'll be sending him home in no time!

Nolan Gives Early Nod to MSU

Ever since Tom Izzo & Mark Dantonio came to visit, Nolan refuses to wear anything but his State hat. Both coaches have starting positions available for Nolan in 2025.

In a press release yesterday, Coach Dantonio said, "A few months ago, all signs were pointing towards a great place kicker. Now that he's born, I'm thinking offensive tackle."

Coach Izzo noted, "He's 6 weeks early, and still 18 inches long! This kid has a big heart, big attitude, big talent, and even bigger hands. When he gets older, he's going to make Greg Oden look like Gary Coleman."

Atta boy Nolan.

New Video

Looks like he might be a little thumb sucker. He also smiles a little at the end of the video...

Congratulations Nolan!

Nolan graduated from the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) tonight. A celebration ceremony was held in NIM (Neonatal Intermediate), where he will remain until his departure from Devos Children's Hospital.

Festivities included a bottle feeding, 2 diaper changes, & a sponge bath from Mom.

He no longer requires oxygen, but he still needs the IV. The feeding tube will also stay in until he's mastered the art of sucking more than 4 times without falling asleep. The nurses say he's on track to have the feeding tube moved to his nose, take the IV off, and put him in a "big-boy" bed within the next 48 hours.

Nolan was excited to hear the good news...

Nolan 3 days old with hiccups...

Nolan 1 day old on the CPAP...

No CPAP!

Today they took the CPAP machine off of Nolan! They told us to consider it a trial period at first to see how he does without it. They're still going to give him a little oxygen, and they'll leave the velcro on his cheeks in case they need to hook the CPAP back up, but the huge pipes are gone for now. He looks a little happier, don't you think?

A couple of VERY proud parents :)

Helping the Nurse

Tonight we were asked to help the nurse with Nolan's routine checkup. I got to change his diaper and wash his face, and Ann got to weigh him. He's now 5lbs 3oz. The weight loss is normal & expected. We also got to watch the nurse feed him through his tube while Ann held a pacifier in his mouth. He likes his pacifier :)

Nolan News is Good News!

We just got back from the Devos Children's Hospital. They let us hold Nolan for over an hour, and they even let Ann change his diaper. He enjoyed his long overdue cuddle time with Mommy :)

His breathing is slowing down a bit, and he's still got a little extra oxygen being given to him to help him breathe. The doctors think he may be off the CPAP tomorrow already! They fed him through a tube today, and he seemed to really like it. With the way he's sucking on his pacifier, hopefully he'll take to a bottle soon!

If you're curious what a CPAP is, it stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure. You can read more about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continuous_positive_airway_pressure

World's Most Handsome Baby Born, Mom Recovers Fast!

Yes, that's right, Nolan Allen Sarber was delivered at 5:15 AM on April 10, 2007.

Mom is recovering nicely. She's been released from the Hospital, and is quite mobile. She's not in a lot of pain, but she's still pretty tired and needs her rest.

Maybe tomorrow she'll have the strength to post some comments here :)

If God reads blogs, I'd like to thank him for the 378th time for Nolan and Ann's health & quick recovery. They are both blessings to my life, and I can't thank God enough!
